There are many reasons why people opt for cosmetic dentistry. Some people do it to improve their appearance and boost confidence, whilst others do it as a result of long-standing dental problems or an accident. Regardless of the reason for a cosmetic dental procedure, it is important that the dentist used is well-versed in the latest techniques and is comfortable using the latest state-of-the-art equipment.

Cosmetic dentistry is surprisingly common in Australia as many people see it as a way to both improve their all-round oral health and even to improve their job or dating prospects! In large cities such as Brisbane, there are plenty of dentists who specialize in cosmetic dentistry and can perform a number of procedures according to the patient’s specific needs.

Below is a brief overview of 6 of the most common cosmetic dentistry procedures carried out in Australia today.

  • Teeth Whitening – This is by far the most popular and cheapest form of cosmetic dentistry. The main benefits of this type of treatment are an improved smile and a boost in confidence. This treatment is available from cosmetic dentists and also available as an over-the-counter treatment from department stores and pharmacies. The whitening procedures offered by cosmetic dentists are usually far superior and far safer than shop-bought kits.
  • Dental Bonding – Dental bonding is, generally speaking, the modern alternative to the old amalgam or silver fillings. Bonding can be used to repair chipped, damaged or decayed teeth and involves applying a putty which is then hardened by UV or laser light. This cosmetic treatment is relatively affordable and can generally be carried out on people of all ages.
  • Dental Veneers – Although relatively expensive, dental veneers are very popular for people who want a semi-permanent solution for unattractive or damaged teeth. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells of resin or porcelain that completely cover the front surface of a tooth and give the patient a dazzling smile that will stand the test of time, providing they are looked after.

  • Dental Implants – This is one of the most expensive cosmetic dentistry procedures. Titanium replacement tooth roots are inserted into the empty bone socket of where the tooth originally was. Over time, the healing jawbone grows around the tooth and leaves the patient with an effective foundation for a replacement tooth.
  • Dental Crown – Otherwise known as a dental cap, a dental crown fits over and covers the entire tooth. This restores the shape, size, and function of the tooth and also enhances the appearance and increases the strength. This is a very popular procedure and is commonly used in general dentistry as well.
  • Inlays And Onlays – Also known as indirect fillings, inlays and onlays are made from composite materials, porcelain or gold and are used to fill cavities. These are commonly used as an alternative to crowns as they preserve as much of the original tooth as possible.
