Diabetes Can Break Your Heart – Don’t Let It!

This post was sponsored as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

My husband has been diabetic for years. He had Type 2 Diabetes even before I met him and I have known him for almost fifteen years now. So, it has been quite a while that he has been diabetic. Since both he and I are not big fans of swallowing prescription pills, he has been trying to control his blood sugar level naturally. We try to live healthily by eating clean and exercising on a regular basis.

The summertime here in Minnesota is nice. It is our favorite time of the year to be extra active outdoors. We like to go fishing almost every day especially when it is not windy and rainy outside. We live in the land of 10,000 lakes so fishing is the big thing and I think everyone likes to fish here. I haven’t come across a single Minnesotan who doesn’t like to fish yet. We also go blueberry hunting in the neck of the woods nearby. To top it all off, I also garden. Having a garden is the best and most inexpensive way I know to be able to eat organic food.

I am the gardener in our household. I have green thumbs, my hubby is not so much. It seems to me like every plant he touches, dies. Shhh! My garden is not huge but big enough to keep us entertained by watching the plants grow while we are relaxing on the deck. I mostly plant my hubby’s favorite greens and root crops.

The great thing that I really like about growing your own food and catching your own fish is that you know what you are putting in your body.

Today, November 14, 2019, is World Diabetes Day. The Diabetes Can Break Your Heart movement has also been launched with AstraZeneca’s involvement. The Diabetes Can Break Your Heart movement is a national movement with a goal to change the trajectory of heart failure development in individuals with Type 2 diabetes. I always hear this phrase from my hubby’s doctor that diabetes can cause heart disease so don’t let it!

I recently learned that up to 50% of individuals with Type 2 diabetes may develop heart failure, and after it develops, there is no cure. That is an alarming percentage. It is important to take early actions to help reduce the risk of developing heart failure. Like the famous quote says, prevention is better than cure. Keep in mind that the actions you take today can make a huge difference in reducing your risk tomorrow.

At the core of the Diabetes Can Break Your Heart initiative is the Diabetes Heartbreaker immersive virtual reality experience. It is designed to heighten awareness of the connection between Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. This integrated virtual reality experience uses cutting-edge technology to bring to life the symptoms of heart failure.

Talk to your doctor to understand your risk of heart failure and what immediate actions you should be taken. To learn more about the Diabetes Can Break Your Heart movement, visit diabetesheartbreak.com. Or follow their Facebook, Instagram or Twitter pages for more information.
