When it comes to public relations and building a brand from scratch, you really have to trust the experts to achieve the best results – and that’s what you’ll find at Behrman Communications, among the leading experts in the field of lifestyle brand publicity.

It all started back in 1984 when its founder, Nancy Behrman, was tasked to do PR for the daughter of Kiehl’s owner Jami Morse at the Sarajevo Olympics. At the time, Jami was teaching aerobics to the Austrian Men’s Ski Team.

While covering Jami’s work, Nancy also learned a lot about PR during that international event. From that experience, she was able to find not just the inspiration to start her business but also met the people who would help bring her brand much success.

Her friendship with Jami helped her snag a deal with Kiehl’s Since 1851, with the cosmetic brand helping her find more clients. Nancy didn’t even have to advertise her services because her PR brand would receive more clients, thanks to word-of-mouth from the clients they had successfully helped in the past.

Sharing her story on Inspirery, a repository of inspiring stories from entrepreneurs, Nancy admitted that it wasn’t always easy in the first few years; though she had actually profited even on her first year despite just working on the company from inside her studio apartment.

It was, perhaps, an advantage that she was based in New York City where there are lots of brands to work and collaborate with, but the success of Behrman Communications is really due to Nancy’s hard work as well as a good eye in finding the best workers to help her grow her business.

She feels thankful these days that she no longer has to get to work at 9AM but admits that when the company started out, she had plenty of sleepless nights as she worked on establishing the company’s name by helping propel their clients to success.

Behrman Communications has come a long way from that small one-woman team being operated from a studio apartment. The company could also offer a much wider range of products now, ranging from traditional media such as television and print materials to more modern technologies like offering social advertising campaigns and email marketing.

So, what really makes Behrman Communications successful?

“Thick skin, mostly. With all that, I have been through, and as any woman business owner in this city knows, you have to be tough as nails. My main advice is to never lose focus, nor rely on any one person to do it for you. It’s either got to be you, or a team that you trust,” Nancy revealed.
