NMEDA Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles

This post brought to you by National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Morning Side Fit.

I had never seen any handicapped vehicles before I came here to the US. These types of vehicles are a real life saver for people who have disabilities.  They are easy to enter and exit as well as drive for people in wheelchairs.

I know three people in my family that need this kind of vehicle. First, my sister in-law’s brother. He had an accident many years ago that left him completely paralyzed in the legs and partially paralyzed in the arms. In past years, people in his kind of condition would be completely dependent upon others to get around and do almost any useful work. Today, he has a job as a security guard, earns a living and is a productive member of society. He lives about six hundred miles away but usually comes up to visit my sister and brother-in-law at their house on the lake about once a year or so.

He is able to drive his own vehicle all that distance by himself because he has a motorized wheelchair and lift in his van that helps him get in and out easily. The van is set up with special hand controls that handle all of the operations of the vehicle and give him almost complete freedom of mobility. The lift is the most critical part of the van because without it, he could not get in or out by himself. These types of wheelchair lifts are also often incorporated in public transportation vehicles that allow  the handicapped freedom of mobility even when they can’t own or drive their own vehicles.

Second, my own brother-in-law in Germany. He had an accident while at work. He is an engineer and at that time, he was supervising a building construction in Dubai, UAE. He fell off the scaffolding from the height of a two storey building. Both of his legs were broken and one of them had to be amputated. My brother in-law also has a handicapped accessible vehicle now and he’s back working.

Third, my husband. Although he doesn’t have the need for this kind of vehicle just yet, if his health conditions continue to deteriorate, he may have the need soon. He has Chronic Lyme Disease. It has been five years now that he has been battling nerve damage and joint pain. He has said that he feels twenty years older than his actual age and felt twenty years younger before the onset. He doesn’t have much energy anymore and stumbles around while walking. Once, a very strong willed and independent person, he now has become very dependent upon me, especially when it comes to doing physical work. It seems his need for mobility equipment is on the horizon, judging from his current condition.  See mobility reviews to decide.
